THE LIGHT OBJECT

During the course you will learn:

-how to make a felt sample, so that we can calculate how much the wool will shrink and look at how different fibres and materials react
-how to make a pattern, using the information you have gained from the sample
-partial felting techniques which are useful for design and construction
-three dimensional feltwork
-work with different fibres
-felt –strengthening techniques
-how to wire  your lamp (electrically)

At the end of the course you will be able to display what you have made and you will also have the opportunity to see some of my work.

VITA - Marian Kastelein

Felt is a very versatile material and this is expressed in my work, which varies from clothes, jewellery and bags to lamps, lampshades, interior accessories and ornaments (both small and very large).

Opposites such as open and closed, organic and abstract, coarse and fine, static and moving are a common theme in my portfolio.

Within my work I am always striving to find the essential and simple heart of each piece, whilst trying  to bring both, the technical and visual aspects together.

In addition to my abstract  work, which focuses on the themes of “letting go” and “feelings of safety”, I keep myself busy working with lighting, in combination with felt. The influence of light changes the feel of each piece, with the structure of the chosen material becoming visible and different atmospheres being created. This results in diverse and fascinating imagery. The shadows that are formed through the use of light are as important as the different structural elements, that are also illuminated.
